Objective The objective of this section is to reduce the amount of pixels needed to display your image in a web browser.
Image Size In designing web pages that contain graphics you have to keep in mind that a lot of students have computers that can only display 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high and only 72 dots per inch (dpi). So we almost never want to have an image larger then 640 x 480 for web display. Another benefit to reducing the image to 640 x 480 is the file size is again reduced, which means it will load faster on your web page.

  1. Select the menu called "Image"

  2. Select the option called "Image size". A menu that looks like the one below will appear.

Note: The menu may be showing the sizes in inches. If so change them to pixels by clicking the triangle to the right.

  3. Type in a width less than 640 pixels. As long as "Proportions" is selected the height will change to match on it's own.

Note: If you select 200 pixels wide the image will be slightly smaller than 1/3 of the screen, 400 dpi will equal 2/3 of the screen and so on.

  4. Check that "Pixels/Inch" is set to 72 dpi.

  5. Select "OK" when you are done.
If you followed the steps above correctly your image will appear very small. To view it at the actual size you will need to enlarge the image window and then use the magnifying glass (found in the "tool box")to enlarge the image until you see 1:1 in the banner.
