Objective The objective of this section is to give you information on when and why JPEG is selected over GIF and to take you through the steps to save a file as a JPEG.
JPEG Most web browsers can only display images saved in the JPEG and GIF file formats. To achieve the smallest file size while maintaining the best image quality you will need to decide which file format to save your scanned in image. Basically continuous tone images such as photographs should be saved as JPEG and graphics that are made up of spot color should be saved as GIF. The best way to explain why is to show you, and Adobe has a perfect example on their web site. If after exploring Adobe's examples you decide you want to save your file as a JPEG, follow these steps using Adobe Photoshop 3.
  1. Go to "File/Save As"
  2. Select JPEG from the drop down menu.
  3. Select the "images" folder on your harddrive.
  4. Name the file with .jpg extension
  5. Select the "Save" button
  6. You will usually select "Medium Compression" (again see chart)
If you are having trouble bringing up the selection of JPEG in the "Save As" menu, check to make sure your image is in RGB color (under "Mode").

Reminder: JPEG = RGB Color
                 GIF = Index Color
